Famous Italian distiller and wine producer comes to Chesterfield for a unique tasting

Spain and Italy are coming together this month when one of the oldest Italian family distillers comes to Casa Hotel in Chesterfield for a wine and grappa evening with a difference. On the 21st May 2012, Casa Hotel will welcome Francoli, who have been distilling grappa and producing wine from their vineyards in Northern Italy for five generations. Francoli will visit Chesterfield with what they say is ‘the smoothest grappa in the world’. Founded in 1951 by Luigi Francoli, the Francoli distillery has a rich history in the production of grappa and wines. Francoli’s Jonathan Lyddon, who has over thirty years’ experience in the wine and spirits industry, will be hosting the event. Jonathan has an unrivalled knowledge of these distinctive products having worked in extensively with some of the greatest names in cognac, whisky, burgundy….and now grappa!. He will explain the quality of the wines and grappa served at the dinner and will be delighted to answer any questions. The wines and grappa will be accompanied by a carefully constructed, Italian-inspired menu. Casa’s rosette-awarded chefs will be using organically reared produce, sourced locally from Walton Lodge Farm. Stuart Downham, Operations Director at Casa Hotel, commented: “We are delighted to be able to welcome such a prestigious Italian company to Casa and to Chesterfield. Our chefs have worked hard to make sure that we produce a menu that complements the flavours of the wines and grappa.” The Francoli evening is one in a series of wine tasting events that are taking place at Casa this year. Other events include: French, South African and a special Moet Hennessy evening in November. In 1951, at the age of only 21, Luigi Francoli founded his own distillery. His four younger brothers (Franco, Augusto, Giuseppe and Giovanni ) joined him and one by one came to support his dream of founding a prosperous grappa distillery. Thus the Fratelli Francoli distillery was born. Grappa is noble Italian spirit made for centuries by distilling grape skins. Aromatic white grapes such as Moscato produce some of the most perfumed of the grappas. Noble grape varieties such as Nebbiolo produce grappas that age really well in oak. Torraccia del Piantavigna The Francoli family’s 100 acre wine estate Torraccia del Piantavigna is situated in Northern Piemonte and produces exquisite wines mainly from the Nebbiolo grape. The main vineyards are in the Ghemme and Gattinara DOCGs and Torraccia’s wines from these appellations have achieved great distinction in some of Italy’s most renowned tasting events.
