Welcome to the Peak District

From golden autumn woodlands to misty valleys and dramatic winter landscapes, the Peak District offers some of Derbyshire’s most beautiful walking routes throughout the changing seasons.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful countryside stroll, a scenic autumn walk or a more challenging winter hike, discover some of the best walks in the Peak District, all within reach of Casa Hotel in Chesterfield.

Walk the peak district

Monsal Trail

Winding through the heart of the Peak District, the Monsal Trail offers a beautiful way to discover Derbyshire’s limestone dales, historic railway tunnels and picturesque countryside. Following a former railway line between Bakewell and Blackwell Mill, this 8.5-mile traffic-free route is popular with walkers and cyclists alike.

As autumn arrives, the surrounding woodlands turn shades of gold and amber, creating a lovely backdrop for a countryside walk. The trail’s impressive viaducts and sweeping valley views are equally striking on crisp winter days, making it a wonderful choice for exploring the Peak District throughout the cooler months.

Walk the peak district

Mam Tor

With its dramatic ridgeline and sweeping views across the Hope and Edale valleys, Mam Tor is one of the Peak District’s most iconic walking destinations. Known as the Mother Hill, its summit offers breathtaking views across the surrounding hills, valleys and Derbyshire countryside.

Autumn brings rich colours to the landscape, while crisp, clear winter mornings can reveal spectacular views across the surrounding peaks. Whether enjoying a shorter walk to the summit or tackling a longer ridge route, Mam Tor offers an unforgettable experience, although exposed paths can become slippery and windy during the colder months.

Walk the peak district

Kinder Scout

Rising above the Edale Valley, Kinder Scout is the highest point in the Peak District and a favourite destination for experienced walkers. Its vast moorland plateau, rugged landscapes and dramatic rock formations create one of Derbyshire’s most distinctive walking environments.

During autumn, the surrounding hills and moorlands take on rich seasonal colours, while winter brings an entirely different atmosphere, with mist-covered valleys and dramatic skies. Highlights include Kinder Downfall and the historic Jacob’s Ladder, although the exposed terrain and rapidly changing weather mean this is a walk best suited to experienced hikers with suitable equipment.

Walk the peak district

Matlock Bath to High Tor and Riber Walk

Discover woodland paths, dramatic limestone cliffs and sweeping views across the Derwent Valley on this scenic circular walk from Matlock Bath. Taking in High Tor, Riber and Starkholmes, the route offers a mixture of countryside scenery, historic landmarks and charming Derbyshire surroundings.

Autumn is a particularly beautiful time to explore, as the woodlands burst into shades of orange, red and gold. During winter, the bare trees reveal striking views across the valley, creating a different perspective of the surrounding landscape. With steep climbs, uneven paths and exposed sections near High Tor, extra care is needed in wet or icy conditions.
